Child Care Subsidy Program

What is the Subsidized Child Care Program?

The Subsidized Child Care Program is a locally administered program that uses State, Federal, and Smart Start funds to assist families with the cost of child care. Families receiving financial assistance are free to choose the child care arrangement that best meets their needs.

Presently there are more than 130 child care programs that participate in the child care subsidy program in Region A-Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon and Swain Counties and more than 150 in Buncombe County. Southwestern Child Development has Consumer Education and Referral Specialists available to assist families in locating available child care arrangements and to provide information about quality child care.

Who Is Eligible For Financial Assistance?

To qualify for financial assistance, parents must meet the program’s income guidelines and must have a need for child care to support one or more of the following:

  • Employment
  • Education and job training
  • Child protective services
  • Developmental needs
  • Child welfare services

If you are determined to be eligible for assistance you will pay a percentage of the child care costs based upon your income and family size. Your Child Care Subsidy Specialist will determine the amount of the parent fee and notify the provider. You will be responsible for paying the fee directly to the provider/facility. How Do I Apply? You will need to contact the child care office in your location to schedule an appointment. When subsidy funding is limited, a waiting list for parents requesting financial assistance for child care is maintained.
